Sharjah: The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Maldives, Adam Nasser, highlighted the profound influence of the Arabic language on his country’s native tongue, Dhivehi, during his address at the 25th edition of the Sharjah International Narrator Forum. He emphasized that Arabic heritage has played a pivotal role in shaping Dhivehi vocabulary and grammatical structures, many of which remain in use today, demonstrating a centuries-long cultural connection between the Maldives and the Arab world.

Speaking before a distinguished audience of writers, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts, Minister Nasser traced the historic interactions between the Maldives and Arab nations, noting that trade, religion, and travel facilitated the incorporation of numerous Arabic words and expressions into Dhivehi. “Arabic is not only a language of faith but also a bridge linking our culture and traditions to the broader Arab heritage,” he remarked, urging the younger generation to continue valuing and preserving this linguistic legacy.

The forum, held under the theme of “Promoting Storytelling and Cultural Heritage,” drew participants from over 50 countries, including cultural leaders, renowned writers, and scholars. The event featured interactive storytelling sessions, workshops, and panel discussions exploring the influence of Arabic heritage on global languages and cultures. It also highlighted innovative approaches in literature, oral storytelling, and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage.
