Italian Ambassador: Tourism Remains One of the Main Pillars of UAE–Italy Relations
- July 01, 2026
Abu Dhabi: Lorenzo Fanara, Italy's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, said in an exclusive interview with “GulfTourismNews.com” that tourism continues to be one of the fundamental pillars of relations between Italy and the UAE.
The Ambassador noted that UAE nationals continue to demonstrate a deep appreciation for Italy's rich cultural heritage, renowned hospitality, world-famous cuisine, and distinctive lifestyle. Italy has become an increasingly popular destination for cultural tourism, luxury shopping, leisure travel, and family holidays.
Ambassador Fanara encouraged Emirati visitors to look beyond the traditional tourist destinations of Rome, Milan, and Venice, and discover many other remarkable Italian cities, including Naples, Bergamo, and Catania, all of which are served by direct flydubai flights. He also highlighted the charm of Italy's historic small towns and picturesque rural regions, which offer authentic cultural experiences and unique local traditions.
He added: "UAE investment in Italy's real estate and hospitality sectors is becoming increasingly significant. One example is Emirati businessman Mohamed Alabbar's acquisition of a historic castle in Umbria, in addition to hotels in Forte dei Marmi and Venice."
The Ambassador also praised the strong and steadily expanding trade relations between Italy and the United Arab Emirates, describing them as a partnership that continues to generate mutual benefits. By the end of 2021, Italian exports to the UAE had reached €4.8 billion. He noted that upon taking up his post in the UAE, he had set himself the ambitious goal of doubling that figure. Over the past four years, Italian exports have almost doubled, reaching €9.5 billion last year.
"Even amid today's challenging circumstances, the foundations of our partnership remain solid," Ambassador Fanara said, emphasizing that Italy and the UAE share a long-standing entrepreneurial spirit forged through centuries of trade, innovation, and cultural exchange.
Concluding the interview, Ambassador Fanara said:
"From the ancient spice route to today's global markets, Italians and Emiratis have traded not only goods, but also ideas and creative solutions to overcome difficulties. That same spirit continues to guide us today. I am confident that, by working side by side, Italy and the UAE will emerge stronger, together.
