Sharjah: Sharjah Police (SP) has stepped up its preventive efforts to ensure a safe school environment ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year, with the Security Media Department organising specialised awareness lectures on student safety aboard school buses. The lectures, held in cooperation with Emirates Transport and the Child Safety, targeted around 500 drivers and 440 supervisors, aiming to embed safe practices and raise readiness and responsibility among those running the school transport system.

Safety from boarding to arrival

Colonel Abdulrahman Khater, Deputy Director of the Security Media Department at Sharjah Police, said student safety during the daily commute to and from school is a top priority requiring the highest levels of awareness and responsibility. He said the lectures focused on the preventive procedures to be followed from the moment a student boards the bus until they reach their destination safely.

These procedures include managing boarding and disembarking properly, making sure students are seated safely, keeping the bus stationary until they are fully settled, and checking the bus is empty of students before closing it and driving off. The lectures also worked to sharpen drivers' and supervisors' readiness to handle emergencies in line with approved procedures, Colonel Khater said.

Shared responsibility

Colonel Khater explained that the awareness drive covered the responsibility drivers and supervisors carry for keeping the bus environment safe, the importance of staying alert and following traffic rules, and dealing responsibly with students, all of which strengthens the wider preventive protection system and cuts down on behaviour that could put students at risk.

Navigating roadworks across the Emirate

Colonel Khater added that the awareness campaign also directed school bus drivers to check road conditions in advance and identify the best alternative routes, given the roadworks currently under way in parts of Sharjah. He said this helps keep school transport moving in an organised way, supports smoother trips, and ensures students reach school and return home safely.
