Indian Community Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Grandeur at Consulate in Dubai
- August 15, 2026
Dubai: Hundreds of Indian expatriates gathered at the Consulate General of India in Dubai early Saturday morning to celebrate India’s 80th Independence Day, turning the occasion into a vibrant display of national pride and community unity.
The consulate auditorium was filled to capacity, with people standing near the entrances and in available spaces to witness the celebrations. Families arrived with young children, some as young as five, many carrying small Indian flags. Several attendees wore traditional Indian attire, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Outside the consulate, members of the Indian community gathered around the flagpole for the flag-hoisting ceremony. As the Tricolour rose and fluttered in the morning air, people stood in respect and saluted, while many captured the memorable moment on their phones.
‘We come together as Indians’
Mohammed Masiuddin, one of the founders of the Telugu Association in Dubai, said Independence Day brings together Indians from different states and communities.
“One of the most beautiful things about Independence Day is that when we come here, we don't come as people from different states or communities. We come together as Indians,” he said.
He said the large turnout reflected the strong emotional connection Indian expatriates continue to maintain with their homeland, even after living in the UAE for many years.
“Hundreds of people came from different backgrounds, and there was a real sense of celebration and pride. Many of us have been living in the UAE for years, but the connection with India remains very strong,” Masiuddin said.
He added that the participation of young children was particularly meaningful, as such occasions help them understand their Indian heritage and remain connected to their roots while growing up in the UAE.
Families and generations unite
Hameed Yasin, secretary of the Iman Cultural Centre, said the strong turnout early on a Saturday demonstrated the importance of Independence Day to the Indian community.
“It is a Saturday and people could have chosen to spend the morning at home with their families, but hundreds came here early to be part of the Independence Day celebrations,” he said.
Yasin said one of the most memorable aspects of the event was seeing several generations celebrating together.
Children, young adults, families and senior members of the community stood together during the celebrations, reinforcing the sense of unity among Indians living abroad.
He said the participation of children was particularly encouraging because it gives the younger generation an opportunity to learn about India’s freedom struggle and understand the sacrifices made for the country’s independence.
Passing the spirit to the next generation
For Ashish, a JLT resident who attended the celebrations with his family, the event carried a special personal significance. He wanted his children to experience the spirit of Independence Day firsthand.
“They see the Indian flag and hear about Independence Day at school, but being here among hundreds of people and watching the flag being hoisted is completely different,” he said.
Ashish said he was impressed by the number of families who arrived early despite it being the weekend.
“ You could see children, parents and elderly people. For a few hours, it really felt like a celebration back home,” he said.
The celebrations at the Indian Consulate in Dubai highlighted the strong bond between the Indian diaspora and their homeland, while giving younger generations an opportunity to experience India’s Independence Day in a vibrant community setting.
