From Chai and Maggi to Lifelong Bonds: BITS Pilani VC Recalls Campus Legend Pappuji

A simple conversation about nearly five decades of campus life turned into a deeply touching reflection on friendship, contentment and legacy for BITS Pilani Vice-Chancellor V. Ramgopal Rao.

Rao recently met “Pappuji,” a much-loved figure on the BITS Pilani campus, whose association with generations of students has made him a familiar and cherished presence. What began as a routine meeting, however, soon became an unexpected lesson in happiness, human connection and the lasting impact of relationships.

During their conversation, Rao asked Pappuji whether students at BITS Pilani had changed over the past five decades. The response came without hesitation.

“Sir, nothing has changed. They are still very yemandar (honest). They are respectful. They are good students,” Pappuji said.

His simple words left a lasting impression on Rao, highlighting the enduring values that have connected generations of BITS students with people who have been part of their campus journey.

From serving chai and Maggi to becoming a familiar face in the lives of countless students, Pappuji's story reflects the unique bonds that can develop within a campus community. For generations of students, such everyday interactions have become treasured memories long after their college years ended.

The encounter also offered a reminder that a person's legacy is not always measured by titles or achievements. Sometimes, it is built through small acts of service, genuine relationships and the memories one leaves behind in the lives of others.

For Rao, the meeting with Pappuji became much more than a conversation about the past—it was a poignant lesson in contentment, kindness and the enduring power of human connections.
