Buenos Aires: Viral videos showing what appears to be the sea mysteriously disappearing from Argentina have sparked speculation on social media, but the dramatic scenes were caused by a temporary and unusual retreat of seawater rather than the ocean permanently drying up or vanishing.

The videos, filmed along the coast of Mar del Plata, a major seaside tourist city in Argentina’s Buenos Aires Province, showed large stretches of exposed seabed, stranded boats and people walking across areas normally covered by seawater.

The unusual scenes quickly led to speculation about an environmental catastrophe, an earthquake or even the permanent disappearance of the ocean. However, scientists and local reports point to a combination of extremely low tides, strong offshore winds and atmospheric conditions as the explanation.

Strong winds pushed seawater offshore

According to local marine media, prolonged winds blowing from the coast towards the open Atlantic can push surface water away from the shoreline. This can result in a significant temporary drop in coastal water levels.

Changes in atmospheric pressure can also contribute to short-term fluctuations in sea levels. In this case, these weather-related effects coincided with a naturally occurring period of exceptionally low tide, making the retreat appear far more dramatic.

The phenomenon is known as wind setdown, or a meteorological low tide. It is essentially the opposite of a storm surge, in which strong winds push seawater towards the coast.

Exposed rock formation surprised tourists

According to Argentina’s La Nación, the receding water exposed a large rocky formation known as Restinga del Faro, which normally remains submerged.

Because the formation is usually underwater, its sudden appearance led some visitors to believe that a new island had emerged from the sea.

However, the exposed area was temporary. As the tidal cycle changed and weather conditions shifted, seawater returned to its normal level later the same day.

No evidence of a permanent disappearance

Experts stressed that the unusual event does not indicate that Argentina’s ocean has disappeared or that a global environmental catastrophe has occurred.

Extreme fluctuations in coastal water levels can occur when tides interact with winds, atmospheric pressure and the shape and depth of the coastline. Such events can be particularly noticeable along shallow coastal areas.

The incident also highlights how viral footage can create misleading impressions when presented without geographical, meteorological or tidal context.

While climate change is increasing concerns over extreme weather and coastal hazards, experts emphasise the importance of relying on verified observations and scientific analysis before drawing conclusions from dramatic social media videos.

The striking scenes from Mar del Plata therefore represent an unusual but natural coastal phenomenon — not the disappearance of the sea.
