Dubai Police Forensic Lab recognised Internationally for Interpreting Glass Fragments
- February 09, 2020
Dubai:The Dubai Police Forensic Lab has been officially announced a reference laboratory to provide forensic analysis and interpretation of glass fragments.
The General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police had acquired the official accreditation of the Forensic Analysis of Glass Fragments from the Center for Advanced Research in Forensic Science (CARFS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the United States.
Major General Dr Ahmad Eid Al Mansouri, the Director of the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Dubai Police, said that the accreditation listed Dubai Police Forensic Laboratory as one of 30 labs around the world which have competent and qualified cadres at analyzing glass fragments left in crime scenes, fire incidents and other accidents. "This significant achievement crowns our efforts and celebrates our robust membership in the NSF " Maj-Gen Al Mansouri added.
It is worth noting that Dubai Police has received ISO/IEC 17025 Testing and Calibration Laboratories certification after applying the international standards of forensic science process (ILAC G19:08/2014). This demonstrates that the Dubai Police operates competently and generates valid results, thereby promoting confidence in its work nationally and internationally.
The laboratories at the General Department of Forensic Science and Criminology are also accredited by the Emirates International Accreditation (EIAC) for forensic analysis of glass fragments, according to the Deputy Director of the General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology for Administration, Brigadier-General Ahmed Matar Al Muhairi.
"This analysis, undertaken by highly qualified forensic experts, helps detectives solve crimes, arrest criminals and bring them to justice with solid evidences," Brig. Al Muhairi added.
Commenting on the working mechanism of Glass Fragments Analysis, Dr Fuad Ali Tarbah, Senior Forensic Toxicologist and head of Training and Development said it is essential that Dubai Police labs are provided with protocols and guidelines for these kinds of analyses and referential information on all types of glasses. In addition to establishing a database for forensic experts.
"With these fundamental requirements available at our labs, retrieving criminal evidence from crime scenes, especially that of hit-and-run cases, robberies, arsons and destruction of glass materials at buildings, has paved the way for policy experts to analyze the evidence and solve cases and accidents," Dr Tarbah continued.
"With this accreditation Dubai Police has become the first accredited police agency in the UAE and the MENA region, thus joining countries such as France, Japan, USA, Germany and Singapore that provide forensic analysis and interpretation of glass fragments," Dr Tarbah concluded.
