Dubai: The Bur Dubai Police Station has resolved successfully bounced checks reports worth AED 644,164,000 with amicable settlements in 2020, compared to AED 767,433,000 in 2019.

Brigadier Abdullah Khadem, Director of Bur Dubai Police Station, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Police Stations, said that the accused in these disputes are not involved in criminal cases. They are traders and businessmen who failed to settle their debts for some reason or another.

"The amicable settlement option enables them to recommence their commercial activities and go on with their lives," Brig. Khadem added.

The Director of Bur Dubai Police Station indicated that the rate of bounced checks reports has dropped by 36% last year compared to the year before. 

"The Police Stations across Dubai established an office for amicable settlements

in the detention sections, where both parties are allowed to negotiate and resolve the dispute amicably. The police officers play the role of official mediators without any introversion and facilitate the settlement process while ensuring that the rights of both parties are reserved," Chairman of the Board of Directors of Police Stations explained.

Brig. Khadem pointed out that with the previous procedure, the reports directly referred to the Public Prosecution. However, the amicable settlement program adopted by Dubai Police has contained the disputes and reduced their negative effects on all parties.

Brig. Khadem also confirmed that the Station has been taking preventative measures to combat this crime by assigning teams to track down wanted defendants in bounced checks cases, monitor them, and present them to the judiciary.
