BCCI Will Not Interfere in Player Workload Management During IPL: Devajit Saikia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that it will not interfere in the management of player fitness and workload during the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite growing discussions around player fatigue amid a packed international and domestic cricket calendar.

With India set to play major assignments in the coming months, workload management has emerged as a key concern for the BCCI, particularly for senior and injury-prone players. The issue gained attention after the board recently announced squads for the upcoming ODI and Test series against Afghanistan.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja were rested as part of workload management measures, while Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were included in the squad subject to fitness clearance. Both players have continued participating in the IPL during their recovery phases.

Rohit Sharma, who was recovering from a hamstring injury, has returned to batting duties for Mumbai Indians and has mostly played as an Impact Player this season. Hardik Pandya has also resumed training and is expected to return to action for Mumbai Indians in their upcoming match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Meanwhile, Bumrah has continued to feature regularly in Mumbai Indians’ playing XI despite ongoing conversations around managing player workloads. Reports of fitness concerns surrounding Varun Chakravarthy and Arshdeep Singh have also surfaced, though both bowlers have continued completing their full quotas in IPL matches for their respective franchises.

Addressing the growing debate, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said the board cannot “micro-manage” players’ workload and fitness during the IPL, as doing so would amount to interference in franchise operations.

“We can't micro-manage the workload and fitness of the players during the IPL, because otherwise, it will be interference in the functioning of the franchises by the BCCI regarding the activities of their teams and players,” Saikia told Maa Gulf News.

Saikia’s remarks underline the delicate balance between franchise cricket and national team responsibilities, especially as players juggle demanding schedules across formats and tournaments.

As the IPL season progresses, workload management is expected to remain a closely watched issue, particularly with India preparing for important international fixtures later this year.
