Dubai: Dubai is set to introduce a new smart medical visa and streamline services for international patients seeking treatment in the emirate. The initiative follows a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

The agreement aims to create a seamless healthcare journey for medical tourists by integrating visa, residency, and healthcare services. This will support patients throughout the entire process, from planning their visit and entering Dubai to receiving treatment and follow-up care.

The MoU was signed by Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, and Dr. Alawi Sheikh Ali, Director General of DHA.

Under the partnership, both organizations will work together to simplify medical visa procedures, support Dubai’s health tourism sector, and strengthen links with the health insurance system. A key part of the initiative involves developing more efficient processes for members of the Dubai Health Experience (DXH) network to apply for medical visas on behalf of patients traveling from abroad.

Launched by the DHA in 2016, Dubai Health Experience (DXH) serves as the emirate’s official health tourism platform. It connects international patients with accredited hospitals and clinics while promoting Dubai as a destination for healthcare, wellness, and recovery.

Currently, Dubai offers medical tourism visas valid for 90 or 180 days, with both single-entry and multiple-entry options. These visas can be extended when patients require additional treatment. Applicants must be sponsored by a licensed healthcare facility in the UAE, which manages the visa application process and ensures treatment is provided by an accredited medical institution. Companion visas are also available for family members or caregivers accompanying patients.

Lt-Gen Al Marri said the collaboration is designed to create a more flexible and integrated system that connects healthcare and residency services. Dr. Alawi added that the agreement supports Dubai’s goal of strengthening its position as a leading global healthcare and wellness destination through a patient-centered and fully integrated service model.
