Sharjah:The Sharjah Girl Guides (SGG) is continuing with its mission of providing a wide range of creative and educational programmes to widen the scope of opportunities for its young members to explore and discover their potential, even in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic

Targeted brownies, guides and senior guides, the specially designed workshops and competitions held on a virtual platform will impart essential life skills and seeks to make productive use of the extra leisure time they now have owing to #StayHome regulations.  

For the month of May, SGG has scheduled four workshops - DIY to Organise, Glam up your Basket, and From Heart to Heart. Participation is via SGG’s Instagram handle, shjgirlguides. 

SGG launched a competition themed ‘From Heart to Heart’ with the collaboration of The big Heart Foundation to encourage its pool of talented designers design and create e-greeting cards to spread festive cheer in the hearts of young refugee children on the occasion of Eid Al Fitr. Children are encouraged to share their feelings of hope and joy with displaced children around the world, particularly refugees, to light up their lives on the festive occasion

Each participant sent entries to SGG’s team on [email protected] with their full name (including father’s name), age, competition title, phone number, and email.

The best e-greeting card design was selected based on the highest number of votes received on SGG’s Instagram handle. The winner Roudha AlMail received a cash prize and a ‘Spread Happiness’ badge, and her design will be utilised by The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), a Sharjah-based global humanitarian organisation.

Entries has been judged on how well it aligned with the subject matter and objective of the competition, which is to congratulate refugee children on Eid Al Fitr through TBHF. The messaging came across clearly to prevent disqualification.

Earlier in May, SGG had conducted the ‘DIY to Organise’ workshop where the girls learnt simple tricks to optimise the aesthetics and functionality of spaces within the home. Following the steps shown by the workshop moderator, the girls used chocolate boxes, empty vegetable crates, clothing, and other material to work out creative storage solutions and declutter space. All participants earned an Art Badge at the conclusion of the workshop.

In the ‘Glam up your Basket’ workshop, girls were guided in a step-by-step tutorial to recycle household plastic bags and transform them into useful baskets for storage or display.

In a statement, Shaikha Al Shamsi, Masnager of SGG, said: “In keeping with our commitment to shaping a generation of talented girls who can drive positive impact in their societies, we continue to offer virtual activities that harness their energy and capabilities in the right direction. Our activities and programmes are designed to develop various life skills and enhance their values of giving and volunteering. These activities will enable them to transform the challenges of the current circumstances into meaningful achievements that aid in self-improvement and hone essential skills development.”

Operating under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler and Sharjah and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs (SCFA), the SGG aims to inspire and nurture future generations to become progressive citizens who can develop themselves and build a better world by providing the girls with a platform to develop to their fullest potential.
