Dubai: In celebration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Dubai Police General Command has issued a statement reaffirming its determination and keenness on strengthening action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.  

In the statement, His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, the Commander-in-chief of Dubai Police, stressed the importance of this day to reassert the seriousness and the danger of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and highlighted the necessity of joint global efforts to combat this dangerous scourge and protect societies against its destructive effects. 

"We would like to take this opportunity to urge parents to raise their children's awareness on the dangers of drugs and protect them against their peers' negative influence and cybercriminals who exploit the social media platforms to promote drugs," Al Marri said.  

The commander-in-chief of Dubai Police further lauded the world’s anti-narcotic agents for their tireless efforts to tackling transnational drug syndicates and bringing them to justice. 

It is worth noting that on 7 December 1987, the UN General Assembly designated 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by adopting resolution 42/122.

To bolster recognition of the Day and the value of combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, the United Nations launched a campaign to highlight key statistics and data drawn from UNODC’s yearly World Drug Report. Thus, providing facts and practical solutions to the current world drug problem, to attain a vision of health for all based on science. It also aims to share research findings, evidence-based data and life-saving facts, to continue tapping into a shared spirit of solidarity. The UN invites everyone to do their part, by taking a firm stance against misinformation and unreliable sources; while committing to sharing only the real science-backed data on drugs and save lives.
