SEWA wins global sustainability certification
- March 15, 2026
Sharjah: The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has received a sustainability certificate from PrintReleaf through its ICT Services and Technical Support Section. The recognition forms part of the authority’s long-term strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and support global environmental initiatives.
Supporting Sharjah’s sustainability vision
Majid Harmal Al Shamsi, Director of the General Department of Corporate Support at SEWA, said the certification recognises the authority’s ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable development and protect the environment.
He noted that the achievement aligns with the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, which emphasise the importance of government entities fulfilling their social responsibility and providing all necessary means to preserve the environment and advance sustainability.
Al Shamsi added that the global certification represents another milestone in SEWA’s development journey and reflects its continued commitment to achieving positive outcomes under its strategic plan focused on sustainable development.
Reforestation Initiative
Ahmed Hussein Abdullah Al Hammadi, Head of the ICT Services and Technical Support Section, explained that the certification was granted by PrintReleaf in recognition of SEWA’s initiative launched in cooperation with Xerox Emirates.
The initiative involves participation in the organisation’s global reforestation programme, which plants trees to offset paper used in printing. Through the programme, SEWA has successfully planted 311 trees between 1 January 2024 and 28 February 2026.
Reducing Environmental Impact
Al Hammadi said participation in the international reforestation initiative contributes to reducing carbon emissions. PrintReleaf’s programme links the number of printed pages to tree planting projects across various regions worldwide.
He added that SEWA is pursuing two key approaches: expanding digital transformation to reduce paper consumption in the workplace and raising employee awareness about
responsible printing, while also participating in environmental initiatives that offset paper use. These efforts aim to ultimately achieve a zero-paper printing environment.
