Dubai: Dubai Waste Management Company (DWMC) has appointed Ahmad Hamad bin Fahad, CEO of DUBAL Holding (DH), as vice chairman of the board. 

The DWMC board of directors, which represents a consortium of local and international partners along with Dubal Holding and Dubai Holding, is overseeing the construction of one of the world’s largest waste-to-energy plants in Dubai. 

Bin Fahad said: “I’m honoured by the trust placed in me, and to be able to contribute more to this strategic project. The DWMC plant is a milestone in Dubai’s journey for a wider adoption of sustainable energy sources, while substantially reducing municipal waste, and further preserving the environment and the health of the community.” 

The DWMC facility, currently under construction in Warsan 2 district, will turn around 45 per cent of Dubai’s residual solid waste (1.9 million tonnes per year) to energy, with the capacity to produce around 200 megawatts of affordable and reliable electricity – enough to supply approximately 100,000 households with their energy needs. 

The facility, which will cost $1.3 billion (AED 4.8 billion), will be operational by mid 2024, and it is considered a major step in realising Dubai’s vision of becoming the world’s most sustainable city.
