\'Black Sand\' receives Best International Documentary Award at the Sahasrara International Film Festival

Black Sand won the Best International Documentary Award at the Sahasrara International Film Festival (SIFF). The award included a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation, and a sculpture. Director, Dr. Sohan Roy received the award at a function held at AriesPlex Theatre, Thiruvananthapuram, on March 18, 2022. Sahasrara Cinemas producer Sandeep, jury chairman, National Award winner Ashok R Nath, screenwriter, journalist, and jury member Anil Mukhathala presented the award. The screening of the documentary also took place at the same time.

The organizers said that the Sahasrara International Film Festival (SIFF) was organized to discover and promote new talents in the global film industry. The festival also aims to introduce the latest technologies and trends in cinema to artists working in this field worldwide. Black Sand is a documentary film based on Alappuzha sand mining. The documentary has won over forty national and international awards and recognitions in just ten months. It also made the shortlist for Best Documentary at last year's Oscars.

Black Sand also won the 'Nature Documentary' award and garnered international attention. This was followed by a series of wins at the LAG D'Or International Art House Film Festival, Rajasthan Film Festival, Calcutta International Film Festival, World Film Carnival in Singapore, Tagore International Film Festival, Nawada International Film Festival, Prague International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, Paris Film Festival, San Diego Movie Awards, madras Independent Film Festival, Uruvatti International Film Festival, Hodu International Film Festival, Indo French International Film Festival and International Motion Picture Festival of India. The film was recently selected for the Bangalore International Film Festival.

The documentary conveys the true picture of the people's current deplorable state of life in the Alappuzha sand mining area. The film details the history of mining, the chronology of its agitation, its various political, economic, and social perspectives, scientific analysis, and practical ways to permanently solve this problem.

The documentary is produced by Abhini Sohan Roy. Harikumar did the research and screenplay and background music is provided by renowned music director Bijuram. Johnson Iringol handled the editing, and Tinu Basil Paul looked after the camera. Arun Sugathan and Lakshmi Atul are the executive producers. Mahesh, Bijin, and Arun did the editing, coloring, and graphics. The animations were created by Aries Epica. Released in English and Malayalam, the film is translated by Neha and Mrinalini.
