Dubai Police Deploys 45 Lifeguards, Including 9 Female Rescuers, for Al Gaffal Dhow Race 34

Dubai: As part of its commitment to maritime safety, Dubai Police, through its Ports Police Station, has deployed a specialised rescue team of 45 lifeguards—including 9 female personnel—for the 34th edition of the Al Gaffal long-distance dhow sailing race, which kicked off today, Friday.

The event is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai.

Colonel Ali Abdullah Al Naqbi, Acting Deputy Director of the Ports Police Station and Supervisor of Command and Control for the race, confirmed the full readiness of the maritime rescue team to respond to emergencies along the racecourse. He emphasised the proactive field deployment of specialised teams across critical locations along the route, ensuring round-the-clock coordination and oversight of the event.

Significantly, this year marks the first time female lifeguards will participate in the emergency response strategy. The inclusion of nine women reflects Dubai Police’s forward-looking approach to empowering women in specialised maritime roles, including boat handling, diving, search and rescue operations, and supporting major marine events and races.

The Al Gaffal race, a celebrated cultural tradition, sees dhows sail from Sir Bu Nair Island to Dubai’s shores, covering a distance of over 50 nautical miles. The event continues to grow each year, drawing record participation and honouring the UAE’s rich maritime heritage.
