Dubai Police Spotlight Innovation in Sport Through Intellectual Property Dialogue

Dubai: Reinforcing their commitment to innovation and future readiness, Dubai Police convened a specialised dialogue session exploring the growing role of intellectual property in shaping the future of sport, marking World Intellectual Property Day.

Held under the theme “Ready… Set… Innovate”, the session brought together experts from legal, security, and sports sectors to examine how ideas, technology, and creativity are becoming central drivers of the modern sports industry.

The session was organised by the Knowledge, Innovation and Development Centre within the General Department of Administrative Affairs and attended by Brigadier Mansour Al Qarqawi and his Deputy Brigadier Dr Mohammed Al Junaibi, alongside a panel of specialists including Brigadier Dr Abdul Azim Kamkar, Aida Al Noubani, Dr Mariam Al Matrooshi, and Moataz Billah Abdul Karim.

From Competition to Innovation

Opening the session, Brigadier Al Qarqawi highlighted how sport today extends far beyond physical performance, evolving into a sector powered by ideas, data, and advanced technologies. He stressed that intellectual property plays a vital role in protecting these innovations, from sports equipment and branding to digital platforms and analytics.

He noted that Dubai Police continue to champion environments where creativity thrives, positioning innovation as a key pillar in enhancing quality of life and strengthening Dubai’s global standing.

Building Future Ready Institutions

Addressing institutional preparedness, Brigadier Dr Abdul Azim Kamkar emphasised that protecting intellectual property is no longer optional, but essential for sustainable progress. He called for proactive strategies that align technological advancement with legal protection, ensuring that innovation remains secure and scalable.

He also highlighted the importance of investing in talent and creating ecosystems where ideas can evolve into real world applications, particularly within the sports sector.

Protecting Value in a Global Arena

Legal expert Aida Al Noubani shed light on the increasing value of sports trademarks and the mechanisms that safeguard them. She explained how global systems such as the Madrid System enable organisations to protect their brands internationally, reinforcing both commercial value and competitive advantage.

Her remarks underscored that intellectual property is not only a legal framework, but a strategic asset in today’s global sports economy.

Innovation as a Culture

Dr Mariam Al Matrooshi focused on embedding innovation within institutional culture, highlighting Dubai Police initiatives that promote creativity, fairness, and excellence. She stressed the importance of awareness, education, and international collaboration in addressing intellectual property challenges.

She also pointed to the expanding intersection between sport and intellectual property, including broadcasting rights, digital content, and emerging technologies.

Empowering the Next Generation

Closing the session, Moataz Billah Abdul Karim highlighted the role of sport as a gateway for innovation and community engagement. He emphasised the need to support young athletes and innovators, ensuring they understand how to protect and develop their ideas in an increasingly digital world.

He noted that investment in sports innovation ultimately contributes to a more resilient and forward looking society.
