Sharjah: Sharjah’s Department of Islamic Affairs (SIA) has inaugurated Al Salam Mosque in the Bu Shaghara area of the Al Qasimia district, adding a new architectural landmark to the emirate’s growing network of mosques. The mosque has a total capacity of 4,000 worshippers.

The opening ceremony was attended by Counsellor Dr Issa Saif bin Handhal, Member of the Sharjah Executive Council and Chairman of the Department of Islamic Affairs, together with the mosque’s donor and several departmental officials, who performed Maghrib prayers before touring the new facility.

Dr Issa Saif bin Handhal said the project reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to expand access to mosques and strengthen their religious and community roles. He added that Al Salam Mosque will serve a large segment of residents and support Quran memorisation classes, Friday sermons and educational programmes.

Built on a 6,012-square-metre site with a total built area of 3,644 square metres, the mosque features a 2,115-square-metre main prayer hall accommodating 3,700 worshippers and a women’s prayer hall spanning 171 square metres, with space for 300 worshippers.

Designed in a blend of Fatimid and Mamluk architectural styles, the mosque features intricate Islamic geometric decoration, a central dome surrounded by 14 smaller domes, and two minarets that rise 45.5 metres.

The complex also includes Wudu facilities, accommodation for the imam and the muezzin, a library, commercial endowment units, and parking spaces.
