The UAE allocates $15 million to the UNHCR to respond to the crisis in Sudan
- December 04, 2025
Geneva: The United Arab Emirates announced today the allocation of US$15 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in support of the humanitarian response in Sudan and neighboring countries, during the UNHCR pledging conference to launch the 2026 Global Humanitarian Appeal.
This support comes as part of the UAE's ongoing commitment to supporting communities affected by conflicts and instability.
His Excellency Jamal Al Musharrakh, the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, affirmed the UAE’s firm commitment to supporting refugees and internally displaced persons around the world.
He noted that the world is witnessing unprecedented levels of displacement as a result of conflicts, persecution, and challenges related to climate change, stressing the importance of strengthening collective action based on solidarity and shared responsibility.
His Excellency highlighted the acute and ongoing humanitarian crises in South Sudan, Sudan, the Sahel region, Myanmar and Ukraine, which continue to force large numbers of families to flee within their countries and across borders.
He also noted the continued worsening of internal displacement in areas such as the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa, where climate pressures and violence are increasing humanitarian needs.
He stressed the precarious situation of women, children and the most vulnerable groups who face increasing protection challenges that require targeted intervention.
His Excellency affirmed the UAE's commitment to providing principled humanitarian assistance through the Emirates International Aid Agency, in close coordination with UNHCR and its partners, contributing to supporting host communities and ensuring that displaced persons and refugees have access to essential services. He stated, "Refugees and displaced persons are individuals with dignity and the right to live in safety and hope."
He also stressed that predictive financing and fair burden-sharing are essential to ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those who need it in a safe, sustainable and unhindered manner.
Through its pledge of US$15 million, the UAE aims to strengthen protection and assistance programs for those affected by the crisis in Sudan and neighboring countries, and to contribute to enhancing stability and long-term resilience.
This aid also comes within the framework of the UAE’s firm and permanent commitment to supporting efforts to address this catastrophic crisis, and to working collectively with regional and international partners, especially with its partners in Africa, to ensure stability and sustainable development for the brotherly Sudanese people, which confirms the values of human solidarity firmly established in the UAE, leadership and people.
The UAE continues its humanitarian efforts in support of the Sudanese people, with relief and humanitarian aid reaching $784 million since the outbreak of the conflict in 2023. The UAE is the second largest donor of aid to Sudan after the United States since the start of the conflict, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The value of aid provided by the UAE to the Sudanese people between 2015 and 2025 exceeded $4.24 billion.
The UNHCR Pledging Conference is an annual event held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, where representatives of countries meet to announce their voluntary contributions to support the UNHCR's humanitarian response around the world for the coming year.
