Author Shazia Kidwai Redefines the Meaning of \'Dowry\' Through Emotional Legacy in Debut Book

Dubai-based author, philanthropist, and financial advisor Shazia Kidwai is challenging traditional perceptions of “dowry” with her debut book The Real Dowry: A Mother’s Whisper, a deeply personal collection of letters that focuses on emotional, spiritual, and lifelong values passed from mother to daughter.

In an exclusive conversation with Amplify by Indian Women in Dubai, Shazia shared the inspiration behind the book, which features 30 heartfelt letters written to her daughter in the months leading up to her wedding. Rather than focusing on material gifts or societal expectations, the book explores themes such as self-worth, faith, patience, resilience, finances, relationships, and emotional strength.

Reflecting on the origins of the project, Shazia said the idea emerged while observing both successful and struggling marriages during wedding preparations.

“I kept asking myself — what really sustains a marriage? It certainly isn’t the gold, the clothes, or expensive gifts. I realised the real preparation for marriage was emotional, spiritual, and deeply personal,” she said.

The title The Real Dowry was intentionally chosen to provoke reflection and redefine a concept often associated with wealth and possessions.

“Society has taught us to associate dowry with material things. But I wanted readers to feel that perhaps the most valuable inheritance a mother can give is wisdom, dignity, faith, emotional resilience, and values that stay for life,” Shazia explained.

Throughout the book, one recurring message stands out — the importance of respect in relationships.

“Respect matters even beyond love. Love can fluctuate with emotions and circumstances, but respect sustains relationships through every phase of life,” she noted.

One of the most emotional chapters for the author was The Autograph Book, inspired by childhood memories of her father gifting her an autograph book that unknowingly taught her the importance of relationships and human connection.

Originally written as private letters for her daughter, the project evolved into a published book after Shazia realised many mothers shared similar hopes and fears for their daughters.

“As I kept writing, I realised these conversations were not unique to my daughter. Mothers everywhere carry similar fears, prayers, and hopes for their daughters,” she said.

The book launch, held in collaboration with Indian Women in Dubai, became an emotional moment for the author as readers connected personally with the themes in the book.

“Some women came up to me with tears in their eyes saying, ‘This feels like something my own mother would say.’ That moment made everything feel worth it,” she recalled.

Beyond marriage, The Real Dowry: A Mother’s Whisper also touches on emotional intelligence, communication, gratitude, financial planning, self-discipline, and compassion — offering readers guidance for life itself.

According to Shazia, the central message of the book is simple yet profound:
“Your real wealth in life is not what you own. It is who you become, what values you carry, and the peace and love you leave behind in people’s hearts.”

The book has been widely appreciated for reframing empowerment through emotional strength, family values, and intergenerational wisdom, offering readers a modern yet deeply rooted perspective on womanhood and relationships.
