CDA Empowers Students with Knowledge on Climate Change and Their Role in Maintaining a Safe Environment
- September 27, 2023
Dubai: The Community Development Authority in Dubai (CDA) has unveiled an awareness campaign targeting both public and private school students in Dubai. This initiative coincides with the nation's preparations for hosting the Climate Summit (COP 28) at Expo in late November. The campaign's primary objective is to deepen the comprehension of climate change among children and adolescents and its far-reaching implications for global environmental stability and sustainability, with a specific focus on the UAE and other nations worldwide.
This campaign is being conducted in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It is rooted in CDA's commitment to raising awareness about children's rights, with a particular emphasis on their entitlement to a secure and sustainable environment. Moreover, the campaign addresses the importance of safeguarding children from the repercussions of climate change, which can significantly impact economic, social, and overall well-being, particularly for children residing in regions that are highly susceptible to climate-related challenges.
The workshops aim to educate advocates for children's rights, which includes both students and faculty members, on several crucial aspects. These workshops will elucidate concepts related to global warming, climate change, and specific international agreements related to climate change. Furthermore, they will highlight the proactive measures undertaken by the UAE to address the challenges posed by climatic changes.
Dr. Al-Sayed Mohammed Al-Hashemi, the CEO of the Human Rights Sector at CDA, emphasized the significance of utilizing the time leading up to the climate summit in collaboration with UNICEF to educate children and adolescents on climate-related matters. This initiative is driven by the recognition of the profound influence these issues hold over their future and their fundamental right to exist in a secure and sustainable environment. Dr. Al-Hashemi also highlighted the pivotal role of children and youth in environmental concerns, as they constitute an integral component of society and play a crucial role in safeguarding the planet and addressing climate change.
Dr. Al-Hashemi emphasized, "It is imperative for children and adolescents to acquire essential knowledge about climate change, its repercussions on the environment and society, and its multifaceted effects on various aspects of life." He stressed the importance of guiding them towards adopting eco-friendly behaviors, such as sustainable resource utilization, water conservation, and carbon emissions reduction. This awareness is crucial for building a generation that is environmentally responsible and capable of contributing to a more sustainable future.
Dr. Al-Hashemi further stated, "The future belongs to today's children, and they have a rightful place in discussing urgent matters like climate change. They should be encouraged to suggest age-appropriate initiatives and solutions to combat climate change and protect the environment. As children have the fundamental right to live in a secure and sustainable environment, CDA considers it a responsibility to raise their awareness about this critical issue, educate them about effective ways to address it, and involve them in suitable opportunities to bring about the necessary change." This approach emphasizes the active role of children in shaping a sustainable future.
The awareness campaign orchestrated by the Authority encompasses visits to approximately 40 schools in Dubai. It also comprises a series of awareness lectures and workshops for advocates of children's rights. The campaign will culminate with participating schools presenting environmental proposals and initiatives. This coincides with the commencement of the Climate Summit (COP28) scheduled to take place between November 30 and December 12. This initiative aims to instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment among school students and empower them to become active participants in climate change mitigation efforts.
