Dubai: The Dubai Police, represented by the General Department of Traffic, the People of Determination Empowerment Council, the Positive Spirit Council, and ‘Hemaya’ Schools, organized special events to celebrate the ‘International Day of Sign Languages’, which takes place on September 23 each year. This year's events featured the participation of 44 male and female students.
Major Mohammad Al Mazrouei, Acting Chairperson of the People of Determination Empowerment Council, highlighted that this celebration reflects Dubai Police's dedication to empowering people of determination, particularly within the deaf community. He remarked, "Through these events and other initiatives, we strive to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities while helping students understand the challenges faced by the deaf community in their daily interactions and how to engage with them according to global best practices."
Major Al Mazrouei highlighted that the sign language workshop provided students with vital communication skills, enabling them to engage positively with their deaf peers both in school and within the community. “This initiative not only fosters meaningful interactions but also enriches their understanding of the rights and needs of this category, he added.
Furthermore, he reinforced the Council’s commitment to ongoing efforts in implementing field programs and awareness initiatives in collaboration with various partners, aiming to build a more inclusive society.
Meanwhile, Ms. Fatima Buhajeer, Chairperson of the Positive Spirit Council and Acting Deputy Chairperson of the People of Determination Empowerment Council, emphasized that these events demonstrate Dubai Police's commitment to instilling tolerance, understanding, and coexistence values in future generations. She stated, "Celebrating the International Day of Sign Languages acknowledges the diversity within our community, embraces others, and promotes inclusion and tolerance, while fostering ongoing awareness of the needs of people of determination across generations."
She also highlighted that the Positive Spirit Council consistently collaborates with partners to launch interactive initiatives and programs aimed at students of all ages, reinforcing concepts of positivity and respect to achieve the councils' goals and aspirations.
The events included a sign language training workshop led by Captain Shahraban Al Zarouni and Mohammad Al Hajjaji, certified sign language interpreters in the Dubai Police. Additionally, Ms. Aisha Al Hosani, from the deaf community, taught the Hemaya School students the fundamentals of sign language.
