Indian Woman Hospitalized in Bahrain After Accident to Be Repatriated to India

Manama: After months of suffering and prolonged hospitalization in Bahrain following a serious road accident, a 54-year-old Indian woman from Andhra Pradesh, Ms. Subba Lakshumma, is finally set to return home on Friday, May 22, in a humanitarian mission driven by compassion, dignity and collective community support.

Ms. Lakshumma, a native of Reddipalli Village in Pullampeta Mandal of Annamayya District, Andhra Pradesh, has remained hospitalized since October 14, 2025, after sustaining severe injuries in a road traffic accident in Bahrain.

According to humanitarian volunteers and medical officials involved in the case, her condition remains extremely fragile. She is reportedly non-responsive, neurologically compromised and unable to communicate meaningfully following a stroke suffered after the accident. Medical staff stated that the stroke significantly worsened her physical and neurological condition, leaving her unable to independently manage even basic personal or legal matters.

During a recent visit to the hospital, Mr. Sudheer Thirunilath, Global PRO and Bahrain Chapter President of Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), described the situation as “heartbreaking,” noting that meaningful communication with the patient was not possible despite assistance from a Telugu-speaking volunteer.

Ms. Lakshumma will travel from Bahrain to Chennai Airport as a wheelchair passenger accompanied by caregiver Mr. Orsu Nagaraju. From Chennai, arrangements have been made for ambulance transfer to Andhra Pradesh, where she will receive continued treatment, rehabilitation and long-term supportive care.

The humanitarian repatriation became possible after extensive efforts by volunteers, community organizations and Indian authorities. Earlier, attempts to arrange family support reportedly faced difficulties due to the family’s financial condition.

In a major breakthrough, Mr. Yeddula Nagendra, Chairman of the Yeddula Pedda Sheshamma Foundation Old Age Home in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, voluntarily agreed to provide shelter, care and support for Ms. Lakshumma upon her return to India.

Pravasi Legal Cell said the case also involves possible compensation and insurance claims related to the accident. However, due to the patient’s current medical condition, legal authorization and documentation processes remain difficult.

The organization expressed gratitude to the Embassy of India in Bahrain, Salmaniya Medical Complex, Muharraq Geriatric Hospital and the Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Society (APNRTS) for their support and humanitarian assistance throughout the process.

PLC also acknowledged the efforts of its Bahrain chapter members and volunteers who coordinated treatment support, documentation and repatriation procedures over the past several months.

“This case is a reminder of the silent struggles many expatriate workers and migrants face when illness or accidents occur far away from home, often without financial resources or immediate family support,” the organization said.

“After months of pain and uncertainty, Ms. Subba Lakshumma is finally returning to her homeland — accompanied not by abandonment, but by humanity, care and hope.”
