Peddi, the long-awaited project from director Buchi Babu Sana, finally arrives in theaters. Coming off a significant hiatus since RRR, Ram Charan’s dedication is evident in every frame of this ambitious sports drama. While the film excels as an emotional character study, it occasionally stumbles under the weight of its own commercial expectations.

At its core, Peddi  is a social drama disguised as a sports epic. It centers on a remote, neglected tribal village in North Andhra where basic infrastructure like roads, electricity, and water remains a dream. The narrative kicks off when a sports official (Boman Irani) scouts for untapped talent and discovers "Peddi" (Ram Charan), a local legend known for his extraordinary athleticism. The film chronicles Peddi’s journey from a village laborer and freelance cricketer to a wrestler under the mentorship of Gaurnaidu (Shivarajkumar), all in a desperate bid to win recognition for his village’s identity and rights.

Ram Charan delivers what can only be described as a career-defining "one-man show." His two-year preparation for the roles of cricketer, wrestler, and runner is palpable, and he commands the screen with a raw, physical intensity. Shivarajkumar brings significant weight and momentum to the second half; his scenes with Charan are undoubtedly the film’s strongest emotional pillars. Jagapathi Babu is reliable in his role, though the character’s arc feels somewhat recycled from his previous works.

However, the film’s casting choices face a significant hurdle with Janhvi Kapoor. Her portrayal of Achiyamma feels disconnected from the film's grounded, rural reality. She appears miscast in this gritty setting, and for many viewers, her performance inevitably invites comparisons to her role in Devara, highlighting a broader trend where modern Indian cinema often populates rooted, local stories with performances that feel distant from the actual soil of the narrative.

The film’s primary issue lies in its screenplay. While the story possesses genuine heart and an honest intent to highlight rural struggles, the execution often drifts into documentary-style dryness, only to be interrupted by forced commercial elements. The introduction songs, the underutilized character of Achiyamma (Janhvi Kapoor), and a misplaced item song in the second half disrupt the film’s organic flow. Furthermore, the first half suffers from a lack of narrative urgency. Key supporting characters feel flat, and Rao Ramesh, a powerhouse performer is criminally underused with only five minutes of screen time. The lack of a formidable antagonist also weakens the central conflict, making Peddi’s struggle feel less perilous than it should.

Technically, Peddi is a triumph of production. A.R. Rahman’s musical score and background themes provide the soul of the film, elevating even the most routine sequences. R. Rathnavelu’s cinematography captures the rugged, untamed beauty of the North Andhra landscape perfectly, while the production design reflects the producers' willingness to spare no expense.

Peddi is a film of two halves. The second half is gripping, emotional, and technically superior, leading to a climax that is both bold and unexpected. However, the excessive three-hour runtime and the insistence on shoehorning in "mass" tropes prevent it from reaching the heights of a classic. Ultimately, Peddi serves as a showcase for Ram Charan’s immense growth as an actor. It is not quite a masterpiece, but it is a sincere effort that resonates because of its lead’s grit and the director’s ambition to tell a story of regional pride.
