Hyderabad: The Society to Save Rocks and the Hyderabad Runners conducted the annual Run for Rocks programme in the wee hours of 7th July starting from scenic rock scape of Ghaar-e-Mubarak. About 125 runners participated with great enthusiasm in preparation for the upcoming NMDC Hyderabad Marathon. They ran distance of 5 kms, 10 kms, 20 kms and 28 kms.

The run was aimed at highlighting the rocky outcrops that are unique to the State of Telangana and the fact that rocky terrains lend themselves to both to physical fitness of humans and more importantly to maintaining the balance of the ecology.

The Run for Rocks was flagged off by twelve year old Avani Yerragunta an avid upcoming Rock Climber. A student of class eight at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Jubilee Hills, Avani has been making strides in bouldering field of sports. Last year she represented South Zone and secured the 6th position among top 18 athletes across the country. 

The rock sites that are in and around the twin cities offer ample opportunity for cross training and are utilized by sports trainers and defense personnel for this purpose. A simple walk in the rocks provides the much needed physical exercise and a healthy dose of Vitamin D.

The Society to Save Rocks is the only NGO working tirelessly for Rock Conservation for over two decades. Regular Rock walks are held on every third Sunday of the month for the citizens to appreciate the role of rocks in maintaining a healthy environment and providing the much needed lung space in the fast expanding city.
