Colombo: Internationally acclaimed Asian singer and artist Sonia Majeed has achieved a unique milestone by becoming the first Asian artist to adopt an elephant at the renowned Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) in Sri Lanka, highlighting the powerful connection between art, compassion, and wildlife conservation.
During her recent visit to Sri Lanka, Sonia toured the Millennium Elephant Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to the care, protection, and welfare of elephants. Inspired by the foundation’s mission, she officially adopted Lakshmi, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated elephants and the beloved matriarch of the MEF herd.
Speaking about the adoption, Sonia said the gesture represents more than a symbolic act.
"As an artist, I believe every living being carries a story. Lakshmi’s journey, strength, and legacy inspired me. This is not only an adoption; it is a commitment to respect, protect, and celebrate these magnificent creatures," she said.
Lakshmi’s Inspiring Legacy
Lakshmi, whose name signifies the “Goddess of Prosperity,” is one of the most recognized elephants associated with Sri Lanka’s conservation efforts. Known for her grace and strength, she has appeared in several international films and documentaries and has become a symbol of heritage and resilience.
She is also the mother of Pooja, recognized as the first elephant born in captivity in Sri Lanka. Her remarkable life story has made her an icon of elephant welfare and conservation.
Art Meets Conservation
Sonia described her connection with Lakshmi as “an artist respecting another artist,” emphasizing her belief that creativity and expression exist beyond human beings.
The adoption package provided by MEF reflects the organization’s commitment to sustainability. It includes eco-friendly materials produced through innovative recycling methods, such as products made from elephant dung paper, demonstrating how conservation and environmental responsibility can work together.
Supporting Elephant Welfare
The Millennium Elephant Foundation continues to play a vital role in promoting responsible elephant care, providing long-term support for elephants in need, and raising awareness about ethical wildlife practices.
By adopting Lakshmi, Sonia joins a growing number of international personalities using their influence to advocate for animal welfare, sustainability, and conservation.
A Proud Moment for Asia
Sonia Majeed’s initiative has been widely welcomed as a proud moment for the Asian creative community, showcasing how artists can contribute meaningfully to global environmental causes.
Her journey from music to conservation sends a powerful message that art can inspire change, compassion can create impact, and protecting nature is a shared responsibility that transcends borders.
