India’s first hydrogen-powered train is ready!
- August 13, 2025
New Delhi: India has taken a major leap in sustainable transportation with the successful testing of its first hydrogen-powered coach, known as the Driving Power Car, at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. The breakthrough, confirmed today by Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and announced on X, marks a significant milestone, placing India at the forefront of hydrogen train technology.
The tested hydrogen coach is a crucial step toward launching India’s ambitious 1,200-horsepower (HP) hydrogen-powered train — set to become the most powerful of its kind in the world. In comparison, similar trains in leading nations typically operate at 500–600 HP, making India’s design a remarkable technological achievement and a testament to the country’s growing innovation in green energy.
Highlighting its importance, Minister Vaishnaw stated that the project would firmly establish India among global leaders in hydrogen-powered rail technology. The initiative aligns with India’s broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 across its vast railway network — one of the largest in the world. To support this mission, the Ministry of Railways has earmarked ₹2,800 crore (approximately $337 million USD) for the production of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains.
These trains will offer a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable alternative to diesel locomotives. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells, they produce only water and heat as by-products, eliminating harmful emissions and significantly improving air quality. The first full hydrogen-powered train is expected to operate on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, serving as a pilot for regular passenger service. Unlike hydrogen trains in other countries, which typically have five coaches, India’s version will feature ten, providing higher passenger capacity and a premium travel experience.
Beyond passenger rail, the hydrogen fuel cell technology developed for these trains holds promise for wider industrial use, including in trucks, tugboats, and other heavy transport sectors. This underscores India’s commitment not only to revolutionizing its railway system but also to advancing a broader green transition across the economy.
With this achievement, India is not just building trains — it is building the future of sustainable mobility.
